gp, gp centennial, gp 100 years, grande prairie, grande prairie centennial, grande prairie centennial celebration, grande prairie centennial weekend, grande prairie centennial spectacularOkay, so it doesn’t rhyme, but with everything that’s going on this long weekend to celebrate Grande Prairie’s 100th birthday, we don’t think anyone will notice. From July 31 to August 3, Grande Prairie is putting on the best and biggest birthday bash the Peace Country has ever seen – and you’re invited!

The Centennial Spectacular Weekend celebrations kick off on Thursday night (July 31) with the Grande Prairie Chamber Welcome Home Mixer. It starts at 5 pm and will also see the launching of Spirit of the North, the city’s official centennial book.

On Friday the festivities begin in Muskoseepi Park with, what else, a good old-fashioned Grande Prairie BBQ at 4:30 pm. That’s followed by the Centennial Spectacular Welcoming show, celebrating 100 years of Grande Prairie history in song, dance, and story. The music and dancing continue afterwards with an all ages DJ Dance Party. Friday is also the first of three days for the Market in the Park – celebrating 40 years of the Grande Prairie Farmer’s Market, and showcasing the best that Peace Country’s farmers and artisans have to offer.

Saturday starts things off right with a pancake breakfast from 9 am to 11 am, and then with an Ol’ Fashioned Carnival at the museum. The carnival runs for two days, on Saturday and Sunday, and is chock-full of 50’s era carnival games and atmosphere. Poodle skirts and saddle shoes won’t be out of place, ladies. Boxing fans can also enjoy a great card of amateur fights at the Centennial Belt competition.

There’s more entertainment in the park from 1-6 pm with the Storytellers’ Tent, roaming entertainers, and horse & buggy rides. The dance party kicks off again from 7:15-10 pm. At 9:15 pm you will have your chance to do “The Time Warp” again by joining Brad, Janet, and Dr. Frank-N-Furter in a full-participation-encouraged screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Dress up and get down!

Sunday morning, rain or shine, it’s time for the Get Active Amazing Race: A Trip Through Time. There‘s only room for 12 teams, so register early if you want to join in. The Grande Prairie Farmer’s Market and Carnival continue Sunday, and a long list of performers will be lighting up two stages from noon to 10pm. At 11pm a fireworks display will end things with a bang and close off a birthday party for the ages.

Grande Prairie's Centennial Spectacular Weekend will be a party of historical proportions and we hope to see you there!
